In 2011, the Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda (CCPLM) in Santiago, Chile, inaugurated its innovative new space dedicated to Art and Technology. The opening exhibition, titled “Color y Vibración” (Colour and Vibration), was a year-long immersive experience that invited visitors to explore colour through interaction, sound, and touch.
As part of this landmark exhibition, I was commissioned to develop a colour curatorship study tracing the evolution of colour knowledge in art, from the 18th century to the present. The project focused on uncovering the networks of influence and direct contact among international artists and colour theorists, while also exploring how these global currents may have shaped Chilean art education and practice.
The result of this work was the Cartography of Colour—an interactive digital visualisation that allowed visitors to navigate the complex web of colour knowledge across centuries. Designed as a navigable network, the cartography showcased various types of connections between artists and thinkers: shared academic backgrounds, direct mentorships, personal correspondence, collective affiliations, and declared influences. Each figure featured a dedicated profile card with biographical information, artwork, and their specific contributions to colour theory or practice.
Visitors could interact with the visualization by selecting categories to explore specific relationships and uncover broader or more focused views of the network. This approach made the history of colour knowledge tangible, dynamic, and deeply engaging, especially for a general audience.
My role combined curatorial colour research and content strategy to translate complex historical and theoretical content into a format that was intuitive, educational, and accessible. The exhibition attracted over 1.5 million visitors, and Color y Vibración was later recognised in CCPLM’s official 10-year retrospective (2005-2015) as one of its most significant exhibitions.
