Mediaset – Colour Lexicon for TV

The colour issue: How can we unify colour understanding in a team with diverse technical and professional backgrounds?

Colour Lexicon | Colour in Audiovisual Media | Colour Training

This project involved the development of a colour training strategy for Mediaset, one of the leading television groups in Spain and Italy. The goal was to equip audio-visual professionals and technical staff with a shared understanding of colour management across the various stages of TV production.

A key challenge was the wide range of roles involved in the production pipeline—cameramen, art directors, colourists, producers, post-production technicians—each bringing different levels of colour training and often using inconsistent or conflicting colour terminology. This fragmented knowledge made communication inefficient and compromised the full potential of the advanced technology available within the company.

My role in the project as colour coach was to identify these inconsistencies and build a unified colour lexicon—a common language that could be understood and used effectively across departments. I developed a colour training framework tailored to the company’s needs. This included conducting in-person sessions to surface existing preconceptions, bridge knowledge gaps, and establish a solid baseline of shared colour concepts and terminology.

The outcome was a more coherent, efficient workflow in which teams could make faster, clearer, and more accurate decisions around colour—maximising the use of Mediaset’s high-end visual technology.

The project was developed in collaboration with Lia Luzzatto and colleagues of Lab Luce at Politecnico di Milano, Maurizio Rossi, and Andrea Siniscalco.
